What a Website Health Check Actually Looks At
A website health check reviews speed, usability, security and SEO. See what each part covers and what a useful report should give a small business.
A website health check looks at four areas. The first is technical performance: does the site load, and can search engines read it? The second is user experience: can visitors find what they need and contact you? The third is security: is the site safe to use? The fourth is search engine optimization (SEO): do search engines and AI assistants understand what you offer? A useful check ends with a page-by-page list of problems, the reason each one matters, and what to fix first.
What does a website health check actually look at?
Most checks cover the same four areas. The details differ by tool, but the questions stay the same.
| Area | What gets checked | Example from a service business |
|---|---|---|
| Technical performance | Loading speed, broken links, redirects, whether pages can be indexed | A plumber's emergency page loads slowly on a phone |
| User experience | Contact paths, mobile layout, clear service pages, readable text | A bakery hides its order details in a PDF |
| Security | HTTPS, outdated software, form protection | A dental clinic's booking form has no spam protection |
| SEO | Page titles, descriptions, headings, missing or duplicate pages | A law firm lists every practice area on one page |
Each of these areas is covered below.
Technical performance: can the site load and be read?
Search engines send a program called a crawler. It follows links and reads your pages. If it cannot reach a page, that page cannot appear in search results.
A technical check usually looks at:
- Broken links and 404 errors. A 404 error is the "page not found" message a visitor sees when a link leads nowhere.
- Redirects. A redirect sends visitors from an old address to a new one. Missing redirects after a redesign often break old links.
- Indexing. Indexing means a search engine has stored your page and can show it. Some pages are blocked by mistake.
- Page speed on phones. Many customers look for a plumber or a dentist on their phone. A slow page can lose them before it finishes loading.
- Sitemap. A sitemap is a file that lists the pages you want search engines to find.
User experience: can a visitor do what they came for?
A site can be technically sound and still lose customers. This part of the check asks a simple question: can a new visitor understand what you do and get in touch?
Typical findings:
- The phone number is an image, so it cannot be tapped on a phone.
- Opening hours are only in the footer, or missing.
- The contact form fails without showing an error.
- A bakery's custom cake prices and lead times sit in a PDF that is hard to read on a phone.
- Service pages are vague, so a visitor cannot tell whether a clinic offers implants or only check-ups.
Security: is the site safe to use?
Visitors, browsers and search engines notice an unsafe site.
A security check looks at:
- HTTPS. HTTPS encrypts the connection between the visitor and your site. Browsers warn visitors about pages without it.
- Certificates. An expired certificate triggers a browser warning.
- Outdated software. Old plugins and themes are a common way in for attackers.
- Forms. A form without bot protection fills your inbox with spam. A dental clinic or law firm that collects personal details needs to take this part seriously.
SEO: do search engines and AI assistants understand you?
SEO is the work of helping search engines understand and show your pages. The same structure also helps AI assistants that answer questions about local services.
This part of the check looks at:
- Page titles and descriptions. These are the lines people see in search results. Missing or identical titles are common.
- Headings. Clear headings tell readers and search engines what each section covers.
- One page per service. A law firm that puts family law, employment law and contracts on one page makes it harder to be found for any of them.
- Duplicate pages. Two pages with almost the same text compete with each other.
- Language versions. For a business that serves customers in several countries, each language needs its own correct pages.
What should you get at the end of a health check?
A score alone does not help you decide anything. A useful report gives you:
- The page that has the problem.
- What the problem is, in plain words.
- Why it matters for visitors or search.
- What fixing it involves, and what to fix first.
- A way to see later whether the fix changed anything.
Be careful with any report or provider that promises rankings or traffic. No one controls how search engines rank pages.
How does AMOS handle a website health check?
AMOS is a product of Softalika. It is for service businesses with roughly 5 to 50 people that get new customers through their website and have no SEO, content or IT team, for example a dental clinic, a law firm, a bakery or a plumber.
Here is what AMOS does, and what you decide:
- AMOS finds the problems. You sign in to the panel and see what holds your site back, page by page, with the reason.
- AMOS writes the fixes in your voice. It proposes fixes, articles and site changes.
- You approve. Nothing goes live on your website without your approval.
- AMOS reports what changed. We do not promise rankings, traffic or revenue. AMOS reports measured change in impressions, clicks and enquiries next to the work that was done.
Your data stays under your control. Each AMOS customer runs on their own isolated Cloudflare resources. You decide how long data is kept, and you can export or delete your data at any time.
AMOS does not run social media or advertising, and it does not build online shops.
How do you start a pilot?
A pilot starts with a short call about your website, your team and the markets you sell in. The AMOS team then sets AMOS up for you. You sign in to the panel with an e-mail code and review what it found.
The length, terms and price of the pilot are agreed on that call. There is no public price list yet. To request a pilot, use the form on our contact page. We reply within one working day.
